OUT OF THE BLUE!

And, finally, I can show the first results of a long term project which I began some years ago with my friends Bruno D’Amicis and Marco Colombo! Massive and invisible at the same time, the Mediterranean monk seal is struggling to regain space on the shores of the World’s busiest sea. Its secrets, enclosed in the folds of the wildest coastlines, are revealed in this book. The result is a unique portrait of this species, in which aesthetics and scientific facts merge. Whitley Award video

The hooded grebe project carried out by Aves Argentinas  received the Whitley Award, one of the highest recognitions for a conservation project. I am proud to have contributed to the visual outputs of this project. A video including footage taken by several people, including myself, has been released. I must say that it is very special to see my shots, even if just a few seconds, narrated by Sir David Attenborough! You can watch it here.

NEW BOOK: Sahara “erg | reg”

“Erg | Reg” is my second book, and it is an invitation to discover the landscapes  and wildlife of the Sahara desert. I have been working on this since the 2008, but especially in the last four years. I had to deal with sandstorms and downpours, and most of the time I returned to my base-camp with empty memory cards. However, sometimes the results have come, and they have rewarded all my efforts. Lockdown interview

Montphoto is producing a series of video during which photographers talk about their projects and their daily life during the current lockdown. You can watch the video here. I have been talking about my Sahara project, showing also some recent footage from the latest expedition. I am now working on selecting the pictures for an exhibition and a new book that will be published in autumn.

New story: Wild Alhambra

I spent the last two month working in the Sahara desert within the grant got by Montphoto/WWF Spain. Now I am in lockdown at home, editing the pictures in order to present them (through a talk, an exhibition and also a book) at the next Montphoto Fest in October. Therefore, I also found some time to update the website with a new gallery, focused on the wildlife – especially amphibians – in the Alhambra monument.

GDT International Nature Photography Festival 2019

I had a great time at the GDT Festival. The title of my presentation was “Beyond alpenglows: conservation stories from Patagonia”. It has been a honor to talk about my experiences on such a prestigious stage, sharing it with so many talented photographers. And it was a nice sensation to see one of my favorite hooded grebe pictures everywhere, used on one of the festival posters. I hope to come back in the next years!

Conservation photojournalism grant

I have been awarded with the MontPhoto / WWF España grant for conservation photojournalism. I am very happy for this, but I also know that it is a great responsibility and that I will have to work very hard to complete my project, focused on Sahara desert wildlife. I carried out already several expeditions in the last 10 years, but time and financial constraints prevented me to fully accomplish my goals. I hope that this grant will allow me to complete the project. My work is carried out in collaboration with the Spanish NGO Harmusch. Click here to get more insights

Eleonora’s falcon documentary

From the Mediterranean Sea to Madagascar: a couple of years ago I collaborated with ARTE channel to the production of a documentary on the Eleonora’s falcon migration, largely based on the findings exposed in my PhD thesis. You can watch the trailer by clicking hereIt has been a privileged experience, including travels to countries where I never went before, such as Mali and Madagascar. I am very happy that an amazing phenomena like this trans-equatorial migration is shown to a wide audience.

Terre Sauvage: special issue on Andalusia

The April issue of Terre Sauvage magazine (France) dedicates a lot of space to Andalusia, with three stories on which I have been working close to my hometown, Granada. In particular, the one regarding amphibians conservation in the Alhambra is definitely the most “zero distance” photo project I have ever done! The other two stories are about the Iberian ibex, from the desert to the Mediterranean coast, and the biodiversity of Sierra Nevada.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015

I am very happy to announce that I have got two placings in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015! My “Butterfly in cristal” won the invertebrates category, while “Tunnel of spring” is finalist in the “On the land” category. See my galleries “My Mediterranean” and “Las Beticas” to see more pictures from the relative stories. Both photographs have been taken in locations that I knwo very well and for which I feel a strong connection. The butterfly, in my native region (Salento, Italy), in the very first place where I started using a reflex camare 15 years before. And the tunnel was located in Sierra Nevada (Spain), where I am currently living and developing a long term project.
